Robert and Maria Staak:
"The arrangement of Black Sabbath’s songs was actually quite similar to our everyday work with medieval manuscripts. First, we selected the songs and, from those, suitable material—mainly melodies, to some extent harmonies, and a few guitar riffs. The goal was not to reproduce the originals note for note; in fact, some entire sections of certain songs were left out. We treated the filtered essence as medieval source material. In some songs, the melody was treated with rhythmic freedom, depending on the text, much like Gregorian chants are sung. Others follow the patterns of medieval rhythmic modes. According to the moods, we added instrumental accompaniments. To summarize, one could say we aimed to follow the style of the 14th century, with exceptions being Spiral Architect, arranged as a 16th-century lute song, and A Hard Road, which has a Renaissance-inspired bagpipe tune."
