In an old merchant's house, the craft of making a traditional honey cake, as it was done in ancient times between two wooden molds, comes to life. Masters Angéla Milner and Mirtill Seregély arrive from faraway Hungary to guide the process. Medieval-style gingerbread is crafted, and traditional Hungarian honey cakes are decorated.
In the Middle Ages, the crafting of wax figurines, honey-based beverages, and honey pastries initially spread in monasteries engaged in beekeeping and later in the surrounding settlements. As early as the 15th century, carved wooden molds for honey cakes were known to exist, created either by the masters themselves or their skilled assistants.
Angéla Milner, a master of sugar mass decoration known as the piping technique, and Mirtill Seregély, an expert in the pressing technique, are dedicated to the creation and promotion of traditional honey figurines. They knead the dough themselves, bake it, and personally decorate the finished cakes. Both are members of the Pest-Buda Folk Art Handicraft Society, where, in addition to making gingerbread themselves, they also pass on their skills to others.
In collaboration with the Tallinn Liszt Institute and Hopner House, participants can try both techniques alongside the masters. Using pre-prepared dough, we will craft self-decorated Christmas ornaments and fragrant, honey-flavored festive gifts on-site with the help of gingerbread molds.
The workshop is suitable for sweet tooths aged 7-107.
We welcome all interested parties and their families to the workshops filled with the delicious smell of honey cake!
